科目:gzyy 来源: 题型:阅读理解

American children aren’t the only couch potatoes. According to a study of over 70,000 teens in 34 nations, nearly 1/3 of children globally spend three hours a day or more watching TV or on computers. From Argentina to Zambia, Regina Guthold of the World Health Organization in Geneva and her colleagues found most children aren’t getting enough exercise and it made no difference if they lived in a rich or a poor country. “With regard to physical activity levels, we did not find much of a difference between poor and rich countries, ” Guthold said. “ Growing up in a poor country does not necessarily mean that kids get more physical activity.” The study, published in The Journal of Pediatrics, looked at 72,845 schoolchildren aged 13 to 15 from North an South America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The children were surveyed between 2003 and 2007.

The researchers defined adequate physical activity as at least an hour of exercise outside of gym class at least five days a week. Children who spent three or more hours a day watching TV, playing computer games, or chatting with friends----except from time in school or time spent doing homework---were classified as sedentary (久坐的). The researchers found only 1/4 of the boys and 15% of girls were getting enough exercise by these definitions. 1/4 of boys and approximately 30% of girls were sedentary and didn’t get enough exercise with girls less active than boys in every country except from Zambia. While the study didn’t look at the reasons behind the lack of physical activity in various nations, it is believed that urbanization(城市化) could be a factor as well as to cars and TVs.

       C. Children in rich countries enjoy better sports facilities

       D. Most children are lack of physical exercise.

63.  What does the speaker say about the study?

       A. It lasted for more than five years.

       B. It was carried out in America, Asia and Africa.

       C. It surveyed 72,000 school children.

       D. It defined how much exercise is enough.

64.  According to the passage, why can’t children get adequate physical activity?

       A. There is limited space for physical exercise.

Turns out we aren’t good at walking and talking at the same time, according to a study of pedestrians (行人) on their cell phones.

Nearly one-third of pedestrians (29.8% ) were distracted (分散注意力) by their mobile  devices while crossing the street, say researchers of a study published online in the journal Injury Prevention.

Just as drivers who text, talk on cell phones, or adjust MP3 players increase their risk of losing control of their vehicles, pedestrians distracted by their conversations or their devices also put themselves at higher risk of getting into an accident.

During the summer of 2012, scientists in Seattle, Wash. , studied 1,102 pedestrians at 20 crossroads seeing the city * s highest number of pedestrian injuries over the past few years.

They watched how pedestrians crossed the street @ whether they looked both ways or obeyed the crossroad signal @ and also recorded how long it took pedestrians to do so. Distractions included listening to music with headphones, using a cell phone or earpiece to talk on a cell phone, text messaging, and talking with another person.

Overall, researchers found the most common distraction among pedestrians was listening to music (11.2%), followed by text messaging (7.3%), and using a handheld phone(6.2%). But the most absorbing distraction was texting. Compared to pedestrians who were not distracted, those who were texting took 1.87 seconds longer to cross and were four times more likely to not look where they were going, disobey traffic lights, or cross outside of the crosswalk. While the study did not track injuries related to these trends, previous studies have linked such activities to a higher risk of being injured while crossing the street.

Combined with the rise in the use of mobile devices, especially smart phones, the results raise concerns that multi-tasking while walking may be a rising concern for pedestrians. And that danger may only climb, as the number of wireless devices has already exceeded the population of the United States. Last year, roughly 1,152 people wound up in the emergency room to treat injuries caused by using a cell phone or electronic device, the Consumer Product Safety Commission told the Associated Press in July. Those numbers may be underestimated, however, because patients may not always admit that they were using their phones along with other activities such as walking or driving when they were hurt.

People Born in Autumn Live Longer

People born in the autumn live longer than those born in the spring and are less likely to fall chronically ill when they are older, according to an Austrian scientist.

Using census(人口普查)data for more than one million people in Austria, Denmark and Australia, scientists at the Max Planck Institute in the northern German town of Rostock found the month of birth was related to life expectancy(预期寿命)over the age of 50. Seasonal differences in what mothers ate during pregnancy, and infections occurring at different times of the year could both have an impact on the health of a new-born baby and could influence its life expectancy in older age. “A mother giving birth in spring spends the last phase of her pregnancy in winter, when she will eat less vitamins than in summer,” said Gabriele Doblhammer, one of a team of scientists who carried out the research. “When she stops breast-feeding and starts giving her baby normal food, it’s in the hot weeks of summer when babies are prone (易于)to infections of the digestive system.” In Austria, adults born in autumn (October-December) lived about seven months longer than those born in spring (April-June), and in Denmark adults with birthdays in autumn outlived those born in spring by about four months. In the southern hemisphere, the picture was similar. Adults born in the Australian autumn—the European spring—lived about four months longer than those born in the Australian spring. The study focused on people born at the beginning of the 20th century, using death certificates and census data. Although nutrition at all times of the year has improved since then, the seasonal pattern persists, Doblhammer said.

But on the other hand, according to a study of more 40,000 people, those born in spring and summer report themselves luckier than those born in autumn or winter. Professor Richard Wise-man who led the research explained that the temperature at the time of birth might influence the development of the brain and seasonal factors make a difference as well.

The underlined word “outlived” in the text probably means ________.

A. lived out of                                          B. depended on

C. had a shorter life than                            D. lived longer than

The census data of the following countries is used for research EXCEPT _______.

A. Germany.                                      B. Denmark.

C. Australia.                                      D. Austria.

What’s the main idea of this text?

A. Nutrition at all times of the year has improved since the beginning of the 20th century.

B. In Austria, adults born in autumn (October—December) lived about seven months longer than those born in spring (April— June).

C. People born in autumn live longer than those born in spring and are less likely to fall ill when they are older.

D. Babies are prone to infections of the digestive system.

Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?

A. Infections occurring at different times of the year influence the health of a new-born baby.

B. The study focused on people born in the late 20th century.

C. A mother giving birth in spring eats less vitamins during the last phase of her pregnancy in winter.

D. What mothers ate during pregnancy could have an impact on the babies’ life expectancy in older age.

The right sentence of the following is ________.

A. The month of birth was not related to life expectancy over the age of 50.

B. A mother giving birth in spring spends the last phase of her pregnancy in winter, eating more vitamins than in summer.

C. Stopping breast-feeding and starting giving babies normal food must make babies prone to get infected with the digestive system in the hot weeks of summer.

D. Adults born in the Australian autumn―the European spring―lived about four months longer than those born in the Australian spring.

American children aren't the only couch potatoes with nearly one third of children globally spending three hours a day or more watching TV or on computers, according to the study of over 70,000 teens in 34 nations.

From Argentina to Zambia, Regina Guthold of the World Health Organization in Geneva and her colleagues found most children weren't getting enough exercise and that it made no difference if they lived in a rich or a poor country.“With regards to physical activities levels, we did not find much of a difference between poor and rich countries,” Guthold said.“Growing up in a poor country does not necessarily mean that kids get more physical activities.”The study was published in The Journal of Pediatrics, looking at 72,845 schoolchildren aged 13 to 15 from North and South America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The children were surveyed between 2003 and 2007.

The researchers defined adequate physical activity as at least an hour of exercise outside of gym class at least five days a week. Children who spent three or more hours a day watching TV,playing computer games, or chatting with friends—aside from time in school or time spent doing homework—were classified as sedentary.

The researchers found only one quarter of the boys and 15 percent of the girls were getting enough exercise by these definitions. A quarter of boys and nearly 30 percent of girls were sedentary and didn't get enough exercise with girls less active than boys in every country aside from Zambia.

Uruguay had the highest percentage of active boys, at 42 percent, while Zambia had the lowest, at 8 percent. Girls from India were the most active, with 37 percent meeting exercise recommendation, while girls from Egypt were the least active, with just 4 percent getting adequate exercise. Children in Myanmar were the least sedentary, with 13 percent of boys and 8 percent of girls classified as sedentary. The most sedentary nations were St. Lucia and the Cayman Islands, with 58 percent of boys and 64 percent of girls spending at least three hours a day in sedentary activities.

People show deep concern for kids' lack of physical activity in various nations. Why do they have a low level of physical activity? Guthold speculated(推测)that urbanization(都市化) could be a factor as well as access to cars and TVs.

Sweet potatoes are fat-free, high in fiber and full of the vitamins that research suggests reduce your risk of life-shortening diseases. To stay healthy, we must eat more fruits and vegetables, and sweet potatoes are a great source of beta carotene(胡萝卜素) and other carotenoids(which the body turns into vitamin A). According to a study of the diets of almost 90,000 nurses, eating about one cup a day of fruits and vegetables rich in carotenoids can cut your risk of stroke in half and reduce your risk of heart disease by 22 percent. Other research suggests beta carotene protects against breast, lung and stomach cancers.
Beta carotene is the most famous member of the carotenoids family. In face, a medium-sized sweet potato contains nearly 12mg of beta carotene(anti-aging experts usually suggest 6 to 11 mg per day). Sweet potatoes are also a low-fat source of vitamin E. Research has linked high E diets with a lower risk of heart disease. This vitamin pill in an orange jacket also packs a vitamin C punchit which has more C than apricots (a kind of fruit). Research suggests that vitamin C protects against ailments (小疾) ranging from cataracts(an eye disease) to cancer. In addition, a UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) study linked high vitamin C diets with a longer life. Recent studies have showed that antioxidant Vitamins C, E and beta carotene fight a fierce battle against free radicals (自由基),which cause cell damage and lead to various illness. Therefore, to keep fit, eat more sweet potatoes.

You’re rushing to work and a man ahead of you collapses on the sidewalk. Do you stop to help? In a study of by-standers, it was found that some people avert their gaze and keep on  walking rather than stop and get involved.

“There is a tendency to decide that no action is needed.” says a psychologist. “The first thoughts that pop into your mind often keep you from offering help. In order to take action, you have to work against them.” Here are some common thoughts that might prevent you from helping.

● Why should I be the one? I’m probably not the most competent(有能力的) person in this crowd. You might think someone older or with more medical knowledge should offer assistance.

● What if he doesn’t really need my help? The fear of embarrassment is powerful; no one wants to risk looking foolish in front of others.

● No one else looks concerned- this must not be a problem. We can follow the people around us, but most people tend to hold back their emotions in public.

“If you spot trouble and find yourself explaining inaction, force yourself to stop and evaluate the situation instead of walking on,” says the psychologist. “Then retry to involve other people; you don’t have to take on the entire responsibility of being helpful. Sometimes it’s just a matter of turning to the person next to you and saying, ‘It looks like we should do something.’ Or asking someone if an ambulance has been called and, if not, to call for one. Once you take action, most people will follow you.”

1.Which is NOT the common thought that stops you from helping others?

A.I’m not the very person capable of setting the problem.

B.It looks like we should do something.

C.It must not be a problem as no one else is concerned.

C.They will turn away their eyes and go on walking.

D.They will laugh at him.

B.we should take on the whole responsibility and do something alone.

C.we should stop and evaluate the situation and try to make other people follow.
