Noah Webster was born on October 16 ,1758,in the West Division of Hartford, where his father farmed and worked as a weaver. His mother was a housewife.
Few people went to college at that time, but Noah loved so much to learn that his parents let him go to Yale,Connecticut's only college. Noah graduated in 1778. He desired (渴望) to study law,but his parents didn't have more money to send him to school. So,in order to make a living,Noah taught in Glastonbury,Hartford and West Hartford. Later he studied law.
Noah did not like American schools. Sometimes 70 children of all ages were crammed (挤满) into one-room schoolhouses with poor books and untrained teachers. Their books came from England. Noah thought that Americans should learn from American books,so in 1783,Noah wrote his own textbook A Grammatical Institute of the English Language. Most people called it the “Blue-Backed Speller” because of its blue cover.
For 100 years,Noah's book taught children how to read, spell, and pronounce words. It was the most popular American book of its time. Ben Franklin used Noah's book to teach his granddaughter to read.
When Noah was 43 ,he started writing the first American dictionary. He did that because Americans in different parts of the country spelled, pronounced and used words differently. He thought that all Americans should speak in the same way. He also thought that Americans should not speak and spell just like the English. Noah used American spellings like color instead of the English colour and music instead of musick. He also added American words that weren’t in English dictionaries like skunk and squash. He spent over 27 years writing his dictionary. When Noah accomplished (完成) his dictionary in 1828,at the age of 70 ,the first American dictionary came out. It had 70,000 words in it.
Noah did many things in his life. He worked for copyright laws, wrote textbooks. Americanized the English language, and edited magazines. When Noah Webster died in 1843,he was considered an American hero.

Big ocean fish have almost disappeared from the world since the start of the fishing business in the 1950s. The scientists found that the number of large fish has dropped by 90 percent in the past fifty years. The study took ten years. The researchers collected records from fishing businesses and governments around the world. The magazine Nature published the findings.
The scientists say the common way called longline (延绳) fishing especially does harm to large fish. This way includes many fishing lines that are connected to one boat. If these lines are joined together, they can reach one hundred kilometers. They hold thousands of sharp metal hooks to catch fish. Longline fishing is especially common in the Japanese fishing industry. Records showed that Japanese boats used to catch about ten fish for every one hundred hooks. The study says longline fishing boats now might catch one fish per hundred hooks.

We all know the dangers of fires. It^ good and necessary for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire. Here are some suggestions.
Put a smoke alarm (报警,报警器) in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.
Make escape (逃脱) plans. We should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.
Buy fire extinguishers (灭火器) and put them in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them.
Practise for a fire. We do fire practice because we teach children about fire safety. Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules:
Don’t open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door.
Stay close to the floor!Smoke can be more dangerous than fire. The best air is near the floor because smoke rises.
What will you do if your hair or clothes start to bum? First, stop!Don’t run!The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop!Fall to the Hoor. Then roll (滚动) !
Turning over and over will make the Hre go out. Put a blanket (毯子) around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.
There are many possible causes for fires. A wise family is ready all the time. If there is a fire, don't forget to call 119 for help.
