    15．Bali is a tiny island that is part of Indonesia（印度尼西亚） today．It is a pretty island that has many mountains and a pleasant climate．For a long time，Bali was cut off from much of the world．
    The people of Bali were happy and had a peaceful life．They were not allowed to fight．At one time there had been terrible wars on Bali．Then the people decided it was wrong to fight or have wars．They made rules to keep apart those people who wanted to fight．
    Bali was divided into seven small kingdoms．The land around each kingdom was kept empty，and no one lived there．Since the kingdoms did not share the same borders（边界），the people could not fight about them．
    On Bali，even children were not allowed to fight．If two children started a fight over a toy，someone separated them．When two boys argued，they would agree not to speak to each other．Sometimes they did not talk together for months； this gave the boys a chance to forget their anger．
    Families who were angry with each other also promised not to speak．Their promise was written down，and the whole village knew about it．If they broke their promise，they had to offer gifts to their gods．

    Back at home，I stayed aloe in my room，fighting back tears．I thought，"Maybe she didn't feel well．Maybe she had some trouble．"I decided to forgive her and try to get long with her．
    The next morning，I ignored the hurtful remarks thrown in my direction and did things and did things Rose's way as much as possible．
    Over the next few days an amazing thing began to happen．My focus shifted from what she was doing to me，and I started seeing Rose as the person she was hurting．The icy tension began to melt away．
    Throughout the rest of the summer，we had numerous opportunities to work together．Each time she seemed happy to see me．As I worked with this lonely woman，I listened to her---something no one else had done．I learned that she was burdened by elderly parents who needed her care and her own health problems．
    That summer I learned a lesson I've never forgotten．The world is full of people like Rose---annoying，demanding，unlovable---yet hurting inside．I've found that love is the best way to turn an enemy into a friend．

    Then I met an agent（代理商）who said I should send my novel out to agents．So，I did and，to my surprise，got some wonderful feedback．I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and，after signing with an agent，I finished the second half of the novel．
    The next problem was finding a publisher．After two-and-a-half years of no income，just waiting and wondering，a publisher offered me a book deal-that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for．
    It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck-of fate，really．When you set out to do something different，there's no end in sight，so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract（合同）of the publisher-to be a published writer-is unbelievably rewarding（有回报的）．
